If you are in need of medical care, you turn to one of the local primary health care centers (vårdcentral). At those centers you receive medical care for non – urgent medical problems and illness.  Health centres are open weekdays during the day for advice and visits. The booking can be made by calling the reception. Some centres accept drop-in visits for minor urgencies. The first time you contact a health center you will be asked to register a health centre of your choice. The subsidized cost of visiting a primary care physician is SEK 200, to see a specialist doctor it is SEK 350 and a visit to a hospital emergency clinic costs SEK 400. All fees are subsidized by the Swedish government and the full price is SEK 1825-2300.  If you do not have a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) or the European Health Insurance Card you will have to pay the full price.

On calling you are expected to give detailed information about what has happened and where, your name and address, the nature of the accident and the number of people who need help. The call is free of charge. For urgent but non life-threatening medical conditions you should turn to a local emergency unit (närakut). By sudden and serious accidents or illnesses you have to go to an emergency and accident clinic (akutmottagning) at a hospital. Emergency departments are open 24 hours a day.
